Furano had one of the best starts to the season in several years in terms of snow conditions.

Before the significant rain event one week ago, creeks at lower elevations were well filled in, and the snowpack was quite stable aside from isolated areas of shallow wind slab and storm slab.

Since then, there have been light dustings of snow in the Furano area, with up to 20 cm reported to the north. Today (2025/12/25, Christmas Day), there is intermittent snow and rain in the Furano Valley. Last night (2025/12/24), rain may have fallen up to approximately 900 m.

Over the next few days, the freezing level is forecast to drop, with plenty of snow expected—generally moderate to heavy snowfall west of the divide across much of Hokkaido. This will likely lead to good skiing conditions, but caution is advised, as there will likely be many ice chunks hidden below the surface.

If we receive a large amount of cold snow accompanied by west winds, as forecast, fresh snow will accumulate on a firm underlying layer. As a result, there will likely be a Considerable or High avalanche risk going into the New Year—specifically storm slabs on all aspects, with additional wind slabs on east-facing aspects.

On the 29th, the freezing level is forecast to rise to around 650 m. This may trigger an avalanche cycle at low and mid elevations. After temperatures cool again, we are hopeful for a period of excellent conditions and improved stability, with most of the underlying ice chunks well buried.

ここ数年の中でも、今シーズンの富良野の雪のコンディションは非常に良いスタートとなりました。

1週間前の酷い降雨以前は、低標高の沢も雪でしっかりと埋まり、局所的な浅いウィンドスラブおよびストームスラブを除けば、雪崩層は比較的安定していました。

その後、富良野周辺では少量の降雪が続き、北部では最大20cmほどの積雪がありました。本日（2025年12月25日・クリスマス）は、富良野盆地で断続的に雪と雨が降っています。昨夜（12月24日）は、標高約900m付近まで雨になった可能性があります。

今後数日間は、フリージングレベル（凍結高度）が低下し、北海道の多くの地域、特に分水嶺の西側で中〜大雪が予想されています。これにより良好な滑走条件が期待されますが、新雪の下に氷の塊が多く隠れている可能性があるため、十分な注意が必要です。

予報通り、西風を伴った寒冷な降雪が多く降った場合、硬い下層の上に新雪が大量に載ることになります。その結果、年末年始にかけて雪崩危険度は「注意（Considerable）」または「高い（High）」レベルになる可能性があります。特に、全方位でのストームスラブ、そして東向き斜面でのウィンドスラブに注意が必要です。

29日には、フリージングレベルが約650mまで上昇する予報となっています。これにより、低標高から中標高にかけて雪崩の発生が増える可能性があります。その後、再び気温が下がれば、氷の塊が十分に埋まり、安定性が向上した素晴らしいコンディションの期間が訪れることを期待しています。
